June 28 (UPI) — Tunisia defeated Panama with a 2-1 win in their final Group G match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Thursday in Saransk, Russia, in front of 37,168 spectators.
It marked the first victory for Tunisia at this year’s World Cup, and their first win since 1978.
Tunisia’s goals were netted by Fakhreddine Ben Youssef (51st minute) and Wahbi Khazri (66th minute). Youssef’s goal was the 2500th in the history of World Cups.
Tunisia defender Yassine Meriah scored an own goal (33rd minute), which became the 50th in the history of the tournament.
Both Panama and Tunisia failed to qualify for the knockout stage after losing two games each during the group stage. In Group G, Tunisia ranked third with three points, while Panama finished at the bottom of Group G. Belgium and England advanced to the round of 16.
