ANC rejects South African President Jacob Zuma’s bid to delay resignation

South Africa’s ruling party has rejected a bid by leader and President Jacob Zuma to resign within three to six months.

African National Congress (ANC) general secretary Ace Magashule said on Tuesday that despite “exhaustive discussions”, they had failed to agree a timetable for Mr Zuma’s departure.

The party has decided to sack its embattled leader, insisting he step down immediately.

Mr Magashule said he expected Mr Zuma to “heed the order to leave”.

If the South African president refuses to co-operate, the matter could go to parliament for a vote on a motion of no confidence.
