June 29 (UPI) — Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi hit himself in the face with the ball while celebrating his team’s goal against England at the 2018 World Cup.
Batshuayi’s blast came after Adnan Januzaj scored in the 51st minute in the Group G finale Thursday at Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia.
Januzaj collected the ball just inside the 18 yard line on that play. He juked out a defender by bringing the ball from his right to his left, before firing a shot into the far post netting with his left boot. He beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on the play, despite a diving effort at a save.
Batshuayi picked the ball up after the game-winning score. He the drop kicked it toward the goal. But instead of netting the kick, he blasted the ball into the right goalpost. The rip bounced right back at the striker, hitting him in the face.
After the game, Batshuayi had some fun at his own expense.
“Ahahha I knew I would be [expletive] the minute I come to my mentions,” Batshuayi tweeted. “Why am I so stupid bro? [Expletive] hurts.”
A Twitter user tweeted at Batshuayi, sending him a photo of what looked like him hugging the goalpost.
