The US porn star who is suing Donald Trump over an alleged affair she claims to have been paid to keep quiet about is to separate from her husband.

Stormy Daniels – real name Stephanie Clifford – started legal proceedings against the president earlier this year, alleging she was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement and was paid $130,000 (£93,000) to stay silent about the relationship with the president in advance of the 2016 election.

Her lawyer Michael Avenatti – who claims to be holding back further details of the alleged affair for strategic reasons – is attempting to have a California judge invalidate the agreement because Mr Trump did not sign it.

Mr Avenatti has used Twitter to post regular updates of his association with Ms Daniels in recent months, and has now revealed that she is to get a divorce.

Ms Daniel's lawyer Michael Avenatti has offered $100,000 (£70,000) for information that will help identify the man Porn star who had alleged affair with Donald Trump is getting divorced skynews michael avenatti stormy daniels 4285499

“My client Stormy Daniels and her husband Glen have decided to end their marriage,” he said.

“A petition for divorce was filed last week, the accuracy of which is vehemently disputed. Stormy’s daughter remains her number one priority. She kindly asks for privacy for the sake of her family.”

The legal battle instigated by Ms Daniels has granted her a recurring presence in the US media, including a cameo in a comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live.

She has also been embroiled in a number of Twitter spats with supporters of the president, who has denied allegations that he had sex with the adult film actress during an “intimate relationship” in the summer of 2006.

He initially said he did not know about the payment either, but his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen admitted that he had paid Ms Daniels – and it later emerged that he had been reimbursed by Mr Trump.

Last month, criminal charges against Ms Daniels were dropped after what Mr Avenatti said was a “politically motivated” arrest for allowing a customer to touch her at lap-dancing bar in Columbus, Ohio.
