A man has denied murdering a British toddler who went missing from a beach in Australia almost 50 years ago.
Three-year-old Cheryl Grimmer disappeared from the beach in New South Wales in 1970.
The 64-year-old suspect, who cannot be named because he was 15 at the time of the alleged murder, appeared via video link at Sydney’s Supreme Court on Friday.
He spoke only to confirm his name and state his not guilty plea. He is due to stand trial in May 2019.
Police arrested the man, originally from Britain, in March 2017 after the case was reopened following new information.
Cheryl went missing outside changing rooms on Fairy Meadow Beach, Wollongong, on 12 January 1970. Her body has never been found.
She was one of four children who emigrated from Knowle, Bristol, to Australia in 1969.
The family of six lived at a hostel near Fairy Meadow Beach, 40 miles south of Sydney.
