A man has been arrested after video of a woman being hit in the face outside a Paris cafe last month went viral.
Paris police said they have taken a 25-year-old man, named as Firas M, into custody who “fits the description of the suspect sought”.
CCTV footage of Marie Laguerre being hit across the face and falling against a glass barrier on a cafe terrace angered the French public after she posted it on her Facebook page.
The 22-year-old architecture student had been walking home from work when a stranger started making “sexual noises, showing his tongue, whistling”, she told BFMTV.
She found it “humilitating and degrading” so she told him to “shut up”.
The man picked up an ashtray from one of the outdoor tables of the cafe and threw it across the terrace at Ms Laguerre, before walking back towards her, she said.
“He started running towards me and I knew he was going to hit me,” she said.
“I did not have many options, I was not going to run, I was not going to apologise, I was not going to look down.
“He hit me. It was very strong.”
In the CCTV, shocked customers can be seen leaping to her defence, with one picking up a chair and approaching the man before he walked off with his jacket over his shoulder.
A Paris police source said the arrested man was tracked down after he was placed in a psychiatric ward earlier this month for separate legal proceedings.
Police said it had been difficult to arrest him as medical staff had to maintain patient confidentiality.
Ms Laguerre, who is on holiday, will identify the man on Wednesday.
