The rescue, which was filmed on a mobile phone and posted by Dublin Airport on their Twitter feed, has been viewed nearly 70,000 times in 12 hours.

Named Emma, after Storm Emma, the hare’s family was found soon afterwards and also taken in out of the cold.

Despite their freezing experience, the animals are said to be recovering well, and will be released back into the wild when they are back to full health and the cold weather has cleared up.

The ‘Beast from the East’ combined with Storm Emma prompted a red alert weather warning for Ireland, with Dublin experiencing some of the highest snowfall in the country.

The RSPCA has urged people to look out for both pets and wildlife as the cold snap continues, asking them to leave out scraps of food, bowls of clean water and helping animals stay out of the harsh weather.

The charity has advised rabbit owners to bring hutches indoors or into sheds and garages during the freezing weather conditions.

If owners must leave a pet rabbit outside, RSPCA scientific officer Llewelyn Lowen said: “You will need to provide them with lots of extra bedding and their home should be placed in a sheltered position, facing away from the prevailing wind and rain.”
